Beechworth & Milawa Wine Region
The Beechworth wineries located in the North East Victorian Wineries Region has some of Australia’s best chardonnay and other cool climate varietals. There are many family owned vineyards and cellar doors, making high quality artisan wines, both red and white.
Beechworth Wine Region
In contrast to the surrounding valleys, Beechworth Wineries are geographically defined as a hillside wine growing region. The vineyard soils are of degraded granite, shale and slate and free draining gravelly slopes. These soil types naturally restrict yield and each vineyard produces concentrated, intense wines. The Beechworth climate allows for warm, sunny days to reliably ripen the crop, as well as cool nights which temper any heat and produce wine grapes with natural balance and elegance.
Milawa Gourmet Region
The Milawa Gourmet Region in the North East of Victoria was Australia’s first gourmet region and was conceived in 1994 with each member providing a service to visitors and proudly displaying the gourmet region’s logo. The townships of Oxley, Milawa, Markwood, Tarrawingee and Whorouly are covered in the region and are home to numerous fresh and processed food producers plus a number of Victoria’s leading wineries.
The Milawa Gourmet Region is home to the makers of fine food, wine and craft offerings, from mustards and condiments, free range chicken, fresh berries in season, jams and preserves, olive oil and preserved olives, ceramic art, fine woven fabric, photographic art, honey, lavender products, plant nurseries, fine furniture made from Australian timbers and more.
Milawa wineries are located at the northern end of the King Valley wine region, between the King River to the west and Ovens River to the north (they meet in Wangaratta). The town is the home to the Brown Brothers Vineyards, which commenced in 1889.
