King Valley Wine Region & Tours
The King Valley Wine Region located in one of the four North East Victorian Wineries regions have one of the most diverse concentrations of varieties of any wine region in Australia. Whilst there is an Italian bias reflecting the region’s history, the varietals the King Valley wineries use also include premium traditional cool climate wines. Notably, the King Valley wine region is one of the highest altitude grape growing regions in Australia.
A range of microclimates are available from the slightly warmer valley floors to the bracingly cool upper slopes. This variance in elevation is why the King Valley wine region can produce such a wide range of wine styles.
A Brief History
Winemaking in the King Valley dates back to the late 19th century with the Brown family planting their first vines in Milawa in 1889. The prominence of Italian wine varietal production in the King Valley wineries reflects the region’s relatively recent history, as well as the favourable climate. When Italian migrants arrived in the King Valley after World War II to farm tobacco, they planted vines to help them feel at home. For many years the area was occupied by numerous tobacco farms and many of the tobacco farmers were of Italian origin. From the late 1970’s favourable government policies and subsidies to the tobacco industry were phased out and the tobacco farms have steadily been replaced by vineyards.
Today, the King Valley wine region is arguably the leader in alternative wines, especially Italian styles like Arneis, Fiano, Petit Manseng Pinot Grigio, Pinot Gris, Barbera, Verduzzo, Nero d’Avola, Grecanico, Vermentino, Marzemino, Marzemino Frizzante, Moscato, Nebbiolo, Sagrantino, Sangiovese, Saperavi and Prosecco. The classic Italian trio of great wine, superb food and warm hospitality is on show every day in the region’s wineries and cellar doors.
Prosecco Road, King Valley Wine Region
Since 1999, when Otto Dal Zotto planted the first prosecco vines in the King Valley Wine Region, five other King Valley winemakers are also producing the sparkling Italian white. Together they have created Prosecco Road, a sensational food and wine trail celebrating the best of the rustic Italian dining experience.
The King Valley wineries introduced Prosecco to the nation in the early 2000s and now the very mention of Australian Prosecco is synonymous with the region.
